Laptop LCD Removal Instructions: Apple Macbook, 13.3"

Preparation:

The following instructions will help you remove and replace your notebook screen. The entire process should take approximately 25 minutes and the following tools:

  • Small (fine) philips screwdriver
  • Small knife (or other sharp, pointy object)

Remove the notebook battery and unplug the power supply!

Your Laptop

Open and inspect your laptop. The LCD screen is a very thin device, only a few millimeters thick, and housed within the display assembly. The display assembly is comprised of the LCD screen, the inverter, the video cable, the exterior plastic bezel, an internal metal frame and hinges. Unlike other laptops, the Macbook's bezel is not held in place by screws, so removal of screw covers is not necessary. The Macbook's bezel simply snaps in and out of place using the plastic as a locking mechanism. Also unlike other laptops is the absence of the usual latch mechanism, so removing the bezel from this machine is really quite simple. What the Macbook does have that one must be mindful of is a built-in webcam camera.

Remove Bezel

Starting from either side of the display assembly, insert your fingers between the LCD screen and the front plastic bezel. The plastic bezel will usually snap off fairly easy. If it does not, work the plastic in different directions until it unsnaps. Work your way around the screen until the display assembly is completely removed.

Note: Other laptops may require you to begin inserting your fingers at the bottom of the plastic bezel.

Hinge Cover

Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the three (3) screws that are holding the hinge cover in place. Put these screws in a safe place so that they dont get lost.

Carefully begin to pry the hinge away from the laptop. Starting from one side and moving to the other side once the hinge cover starts to come loose. You may have to help pry the hinge cover off from the backside of the laptop.

Once you have both sides of the hinge cover pried up, slowly remove the hinge cover. Once the hinge cover is removed, the inverter, which provides power to the LCD screen, will be exposed.

Screen Exposed

Now that you have removed the front plastic bezel and hinge cover, the display assembly should look similar to this photo. You will notice that the LCD screen is being held in place by a metal bracket on either side of the LCD screen.

Remove Screws

Using a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws (12) that are holding the LCD screen in place. Keep these screws in a safe location so that they will not be lost.

Lean Forward

Place a paper towel or a piece of cloth on the keyboard to protect the screen.

Lean the entire display assembly (LCD screen and rear plastic bezel) upright 90 degrees. Now gently lean just the LCD screen forward to lay on the paper towel or cloth covering the keyboard.

Remove Screws

While the screen is resting on the keyboard, remove the six (six) screws from the bracket that is surrounding the screen. By careful with the Wi-Fi antenna so that you dont damage it or pull it out of position. You may have to raise the antenna to reach some of the screws. Also remove the two (2) screws from the top of the screen by the camera. Be very careful while completing this step and be sure to keep the screws in a safe place.

Camera Cable

Using your finger nail, carefully remove the cable that is attached to the camera. This cable will easily slide out of position to free the cable. Also remove the tape that is holding the camera cable to the back of the LCD panel.

Video Cable

The video cable also needs to be removed. This procedure is similar to removing the camera cable. First, you must remove the tape that is securing the video cable to the LCD panel. You can use your finger nail for this or a sharp object, such as a knife. Once the tape is free from the LCD panel, remove the video cable from the back of the screen.

Free Screen

Now that the video cable, camera cable and brackets are removed, your screen should look similar to the photo. Make sure that you have completely removed all the screws and cables before going to the next step.

Inverter

Either by using your thumb and index finger nails or a small screw driver, pull the white inverter plug from the inverter. Once you have removed the inverter plug, the screen is completely free from the laptop.
